Cultural capital is not exclusively classed there are also racialized factors that make students try things in different ways. Theorizing how students accrue credit marries the reaction of the teacher with what students are doing. Students have a certain credit score with their teachers, more able to push boundaries, ask for more — this happens with all of us, with bosses, family members, and those favorites can get away with more. These have racial implications for inequality — what we are trying to uncover is process. Accruing credit results to be the process by which the cultural capital matters.

Constructing Intersectional Classroom Privilege Through Cultural Capital

Cultural capital research argues that social class impacts how parents differentially shape students’ skills, which then leads to stratified profits in the classroom (Lareau 2003; 2015; Calarco 2018). Recent work has documented exactly what kinds of classed skills are produced by this socialization; poor and working class parents often favor strategies that promote constraint in engaging with authority figures as a way to show respect for teachers’ time and build good work ethic (Lareau 2003; Calarco 2018). Middle class parents, by contrast, often favor strategies that promote children’s entitlement engaging with teachers, such…

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, also known as ICE, has brought immigration enforcement to U.S. counties for the past 20 years through their 287(g) program. They did so by promoting local police officers to double as federal agents to perform federal immigration checks. In practice, this has meant the infringement of rights, criminalization of minorities, and more under the premise that a person may appear to be illegally in the United States. Scholars have researched the intricacies of the consequences of this program. …

The European Union has placed themselves in the center field for developing ‘ethical’ ocean governance. The EU has pushed to take such a central role; something not foreign to the power the Union has on dictating what should be perceived as normal.

One of their initiatives in the last decade has been valuing the environment such as regulating ‘ethical’ fishing. One country that was affected was Thailand and their fish sector. After the European Commission threatened Thailand with a ‘yellow card’ this prompted fast changes to their fishing practices. …

ICE has used their 287(g) program to target immigration enforcement at the county level. This program authorizes local police officers to carry out federal immigration work to meet arrest and deportation quotas. This has eroded civil rights and led to the criminalization of minorities, particularly Latinos. While previous research has examined the theories behind local anti-immigration work and the social factors affecting anti-immigrant policy adoption more generally, no large-scale quantitative analyses have been conducted as to why some counties adopted 287(g) while others chose not to do so. Addressing this gap in the literature, the following study uses a newly…

The citizens of the United States continue to suffer from loneliness at epidemic rates (Anon 2019). As a matter of fact, health insurer Cigna reports in their 2018 U.S. loneliness index 46% of Americans to suffer from this matter (Anon 2019). In their reports, Generation Z is by far the loneliest. As one considers these stunning facts, we begin to consider which activities are inviting of group experiences. Such experiences may be able to slow down the crippling increase of loneliness in the United States.

At first thought, one can think of coffee shops, churches, and so forth, but a…

The composition of this project provides a reflective analysis of an experienced-based service-learning case in the larger Hattiesburg area in Southern Mississippi. This case study — within the field of service-learning — considers the scholarship and history of literacy, and lack thereof, in the African American community as the basis of the theoretical framework. Much like the traditional Ghanaian concept of Sankofa, this project aims to do just that, recognize our past to build for a better future (Asante and Mazama 2007).

A belief much followed in the field of service-learning due to its reflective nature and awareness of the…

One can easily overhear in daily conversations discussions on some of the main topics of inequality of education that often filter into popular culture; why do some students get to go to the elite colleges?, if only had I gone to a boarding school I could have attended too, among some of the phrases we may hear. In this nation, we, as a community, do have a general understanding of inequality in education as far as access, affordability, and outcomes go. Yet rarely do we question specific causes that may cause, and often perpetuate, inequality in academic performance and results…

The precarious state of poverty in which the South was left after the Civil War caused many African Americans to move to the North, an area seemingly against slavery that had its moral ideals challenged when faced with fleeing southern African Americans looking to live among these local Northerners. This propelled Northern metropolitan cities with vast resources to be responsible for the worst cases of housing segregation against African Americans in contemporary America. …
