Amidst the rise of the Industrial Revolution, Marx develops his critique of modern political economy in his famous Das Kapital volumes. As capitalism rose in Western Europe, Marx writes a comprehensive review of the processes of modern capitalism to a gruesome degree of detail. As the quintessential critic of classical political economic thought, Marx developed his labor theory of value as an antithesis to the preconceived school of thought. He was adamant about denouncing the unequal distribution of forms of capital in society. …

Japan, a country known for its stern laws and outlook on incoming individuals, plans to revise its policies and legislations amidst recent critiques. International calls for action such as by the UN and foreign leaders have pushed the East Asian country to reconsider its treatment of asylum-seekers. Many of these, partly due to this restrictive immigration system, have faced long-term detentions without resolve; either gaining lawful refugee status or facing extradition.

The comprehensive boundaries of legal access into Japanese borders do not just affect refugees, but it is the refugees’ long-term detentions which have brought upon heavy scrutiny upon this…

As a result of increased mobilization, the EU has expanded its migration policies with the help of international organizations such as the IOM and UNHCR. These organizations have become more involved with EU’s ‘global approach’ to migration. In other words, expanding the reach of EU migration policies outside of its member states. Since its birth, these EU policies have included an extension of rules, norms and instruments to third countries.¹

The EU has used institutions to do this influential work, as Lavenex describes, with multilevelling strategies. These include correcting EU policy, outsourcing the implementation of its values, and more impactfully…

Cultural capital is not exclusively classed there are also racialized factors that make students try things in different ways. Theorizing how students accrue credit marries the reaction of the teacher with what students are doing. Students have a certain credit score with their teachers, more able to push boundaries, ask for more — this happens with all of us, with bosses, family members, and those favorites can get away with more. These have racial implications for inequality — what we are trying to uncover is process. Accruing credit results to be the process by which the cultural capital matters.

Cultural capital research argues that social class impacts how parents differentially shape students’ skills, which then leads to stratified profits in the classroom (Lareau 2003; 2015; Calarco 2018). Recent work has documented exactly what kinds of classed skills are produced by this socialization; poor and working class parents often favor strategies that promote constraint in engaging with authority figures as a way to show respect for teachers’ time and build good work ethic (Lareau 2003; Calarco 2018). Middle class parents, by contrast, often favor strategies that promote children’s entitlement engaging with teachers, such as advocating for their needs, calling out…

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, also known as ICE, has brought immigration enforcement to U.S. counties for the past 20 years through their 287(g) program. They did so by promoting local police officers to double as federal agents to perform federal immigration checks. In practice, this has meant the infringement of rights, criminalization of minorities, and more under the premise that a person may appear to be illegally in the United States. Scholars have researched the intricacies of the consequences of this program. …

The European Union has placed themselves in the center field for developing ‘ethical’ ocean governance. The EU has pushed to take such a central role; something not foreign to the power the Union has on dictating what should be perceived as normal.

One of their initiatives in the last decade has been valuing the environment such as regulating ‘ethical’ fishing. One country that was affected was Thailand and their fish sector. After the European Commission threatened Thailand with a ‘yellow card’ this prompted fast changes to their fishing practices. …

ICE has used their 287(g) program to target immigration enforcement at the county level. This program authorizes local police officers to carry out federal immigration work to meet arrest and deportation quotas. This has eroded civil rights and led to the criminalization of minorities, particularly Latinos. While previous research has examined the theories behind local anti-immigration work and the social factors affecting anti-immigrant policy adoption more generally, no large-scale quantitative analyses have been conducted as to why some counties adopted 287(g) while others chose not to do so. Addressing this gap in the literature, the following study uses a newly…
